Bozeman Deaconess earned recognition in the September 2011 Outpatient Surgery OR Excellence issue. Sara Mitchell, CST, is recipient of the 2011 OR Excellence Award for Patient Safety. Mitchell, one of 60 safety coaches at Bozeman Deaconess, represents a celebration of surgery’s top performers nationwide. Additionally, two Surgical Services Safety Starts with Me posters (featuring Jamie Brouwer, CRCST, Jennifer Weigel, OR aide, Kim Roberts, RNC) and a Patient Safety article about the Bozeman Deaconess 5 Safety Habits and safety coaches appeared in the publication.
Safety coaches Heather Davis, RN and Rachel Pruitt, RN,CNOR, and Mitchell "lead the safety charge in the ORs by adapting safety guidelines standardized at the facility level to fit the demands faced by surgical nurses, techs and surgeons." The publication quotes Darci Bentson, JD, MBA, CPHRM, Bozeman Deaconess director of quality and risk management, describing daily safety huddles and the Speak Up for Safety program. Rachel Pruitt, Surgical Services nurse educator, also was featured in the Patient Safety article stating, "We don’t seek to correct bad habits. We praise and encourage the good habits. That’s what drives our safety culture."
